Galatasaray beat Liverpool 1-0 when the pair met in the league phase of the Champions League and the Turkish champions' excellent home record suggests they could take a lead into next Wednesday's second leg at Anfield.

The Reds qualified directly for the knockout rounds by finishing third in the table and they travel to Istanbul after beating Wolves 3-1 in the FA Cup on Friday, three days after losing 2-1 to the same opponents in the Premier League.

Liverpool have already lost at Galatasaray in this season's Champions League and they return to Istanbul on tonight's for the opening leg of the pair's last-16 tie. 

Victor Osimhen's 16th-minute penalty settled matters at the end of September, slotting past Reds goalkeeper Alisson, who then had to go off with a muscle injury.

That defeat was the second of three in a row for the Reds and is indicative of a topsy-turvy season for Arne Slot's side. 

Liverpool's inconsistencies were summed up last week as they lost 2-1 at Wolves in the Premier League seven days ago, only to return to Molineux three days later and win 3-1 in the FA Cup fifth round.

The question facing punters is knowing which version of the Reds will be on show in Istanbul. Will it be the one who eased to routine 1-0 wins at Sunderland and Nottingham Forest in February, or will more drama be on the cards like at Molineux last week?

Their 5-2 home victory over Juventus in the playoff round was heralded as a breakthrough moment for Turkish clubs in European competition, only for them to then relinquish their lead in the return leg in Turin.

They eventually overcame Juve 7-5 on aggregate after extra-time and Galatasaray's hopes of making the quarter-finals realistically rest on winning tonight's first leg.

Gala earned seven of their ten points in the league phase in Istanbul and they have lost only two out of 22 fixtures at Rams Park this season.

They did at least win away from home on Saturday, beating Besiktas 1-0 in a typically uncompromising derby that saw Leroy Sane receive a red card.

That was Gala's third straight victory in all competitions, and with a raucous crowd behind them, Okan Buruk's side can make it four in a row.

Osimhen can strike again

Osimhen provided Gala with their winning moment against Besiktas and he has now scored in each of his last three outings.

The Nigerian star has had a typically rollercoaster campaign, but he is adored by the Galatasaray fanbase and, just as he did against Liverpool in September, he can give his public what they want in the first leg.

Gala good enough to sneak home

September's league-phase clash was tight and competitive but tonight's rematch could be more open.

Saturday's success at Besiktas was a controlled performance from Galatasaray, but both teams have scored in six of their last seven at home and two of their last four outings at Rams Park have ended in 3-1 victories.
