Match preview

Sheriff Tiraspol made headlines in last year's Champions League by stunning eventual European champions Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in the group stage.

However, the Moldovan side have undergone a number of changes since and may struggle to qualify for Europe’s premier club competition this time around.

New manager Stjepan Tomas looks unlikely to replicate the efforts of predecessor Yuriy Vernydub, particularly as many of their stars from last season have departed, including Adama Traore and Bernabeu hero Sebastian Thill.

Sheriff take on Bosnian side Zrinjski Mostar in the first qualifying round and their opponents boast a solid record in European qualification, beating Utrecht and Malmo in recent seasons.

Mostar are unbeaten in their last seven home qualifiers and look worth chancing to upset a new-look Sheriff side.

Elsewhere, Hungarian side Ferencvaros can get their European campaign off to a winning start when they visit Kazakh side Tobol.

Hungary have made a big splash on the international stage recently and a number of the national team play for domestic champions Ferencvaros, who beat Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League group stage last year.

The visitors also reached the playoff round of Champions League qualification last term before falling at the final hurdle as they were beaten 6-4 on aggregate by Switzerland's Young Boys. That form is a cut above anything Tobol have produced and they should be too strong.

Bodo/Glimt are the most high-profile of the other teams in action. The Norwegian champions, who beat Roma in Europe last year, are long odds-on to beat Klaksvikar Itrottarfelag.
