Match preview

The intensity of Tottenham's schedule means manager Antonio Conte has little time to reflect on his team's performances, but their recent away showings must be of cause for concern.

Spurs are third in the Premier League but there is a feeling that they haven't really fired.

Some might say they have been papering over the cracks and their defeats at Sporting Lisbon and at Arsenal on Saturday have shown they are not convincing on the road, which does not bode well for their chances at Eintracht Frankfurt.

Bookmakers seem unconcerned as they have chalked them up as favourites on Tuesday, but a trip to a Bundesliga side who are looking for their fourth consecutive victory will be no gimme.

There were parallels between the performances in the Portuguese capital and at the Emirates and it is a worrying recipe when you have a defence that always seems a couple of passes away from an absolute clanger and an attack that struggles to create chances unless Harry Kane can win an advanced free-kick.

A scrappy point at Sporting may have made all the difference, but they capitulated in the later stages, conceding two goals and, as in recent away league games at Chelsea and West Ham, they were second-best for much of the match.

Confidence has to be low and with Heung-Min Son in indifferent form and Richarlison doing it in fits and starts, Conte has to be concerned that he does not have much in the way of impact players to call upon as Dejan Kulusevski and Lucas Moura struggle with injuries.

So it is not good when you add a shaky backline to a lack of punch up front.

Admittedly, Eintracht have been inconsistent this year and it has to be remembered that Sporting beat them 3-0 on their own patch and they were also humbled 6-1 by Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

But Oliver Glasner's side were unbeaten on their way to Europa League glory last season and they could have turned the corner.

Victory at Marseille in their last Champions League game has reinvigorated their campaign and they will know a positive start could easily lead to either Tottenham's heads dropping or someone doing something stupid, just as Emerson Royal did in getting sent off against Arsenal.

With 5-2 on offer about a home win, it is worth chancing that such a storyline plays out.
