Champions League: Wednesday's match predictions, where to watch & free tips
Improving Atletico should grind out another victory
Best bets and predictions for Wednesday's matches in the Uefa Champions League.
Borussia Monchengladbach v Shakhtar Donetsk
Where to watch
BT Sport 1, 5.55pm Wednesday
Best bet
Borussia Monchengladbach to win & both teams to score
1pt 9-5 Betway
Match preview
Borussia Monchengladbach have attacked the Champions League with gusto, following up 2-2 draws against Inter and Real Madrid with a 6-0 victory away to Shakhtar Donetsk.
Despite that rout, Gladbach will be taking nothing for granted in the reverse fixture against Shakhtar, who shocked Real 3-2 at the Bernabeu on matchday one.
An entertaining game looks likely, despite Shakhtar's 0-0 draw with Inter in their other group game, and Gladbach should have too much attacking quality for their opponents again.
However, their defence has wobbled in recent Bundesliga fixtures as they lost 4-3 at Bayer Leverkusen before conceding a late equaliser against ten-man Augsburg last weekend.
Shakhtar's Ukrainian league matches have produced an average of 3.4 goals per game this season and backing a Gladbach win with both teams scoring looks the best bet in this contest.
Key stats
- Both teams have scored in eight of Gladbach's last ten games
- Seven of Shakhtar's last nine away matches have featured over 3.5 goals
- Gladbach have scored ten goals in three Champions League matches this season
Ajax v Midtjylland
Where to watch
BT Sport Extra 2, 8pm Wednesday
Best bet
Ajax-Ajax double result
2pts 20-23 BoyleSports
Match preview
Ajax beat Midtjylland 2-1 in Denmark on matchday three with all the goals coming in the first 18 minutes and the Dutch side could make another fast start in the reverse fixture.
Brazilian winger Antony gave Ajax the lead in the first minute last time out before Dusan Tadic smashed home an indirect free-kick from close range after home keeper Mikkel Andersen had handled a back pass.
The only surprise was that Ajax didn't add to those early strikes. They have been tearing apart Eredivisie defences this season, beating VVV-Venlo 13-0 and winning their five home games 3-0, 2-1, 5-1, 5-2 and 5-0.
The Dutch masters have scored 16 first-half goals and conceded one in the Eredivisie this season and they can take charge early on against visitors who were 3-0 down to Atalanta at half-time on matchday one.
Key stats
- Ajax have scored 20 goals in five home Eredivisie matches this season
- Midtjylland have conceded five first-half goals in their three group matches
- Ajax have lost their last three home Champions League games by a 1-0 margin
Atletico Madrid v Lokomotiv Moscow
Where to watch
BT Sport Extra 4, 8pm Wednesday
Best bet
Atletico Madrid to win to nil
3pts 3-4 Hills
Match preview
Atletico Madrid are second-favourites for La Liga after a 1-0 win over Barcelona at the weekend and, having kept Lionel Messi and co quiet they should be backed for another clean sheet and three points against Lokomotiv Moscow.
Atleti kicked off their Champions League campaign with a 4-0 defeat to holders Bayern Munich and their uncharacteristic defensive generosity continued in a 3-2 home win over Salzburg.
A clean sheet eluded them in Moscow last time out as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Lokomotiv but Anton Miranchuk's penalty was the home side's only shot on target.
Diego Simeone's men eased past Cadiz 4-0 before grinding out a narrow victory over Barca and they have a formidable defensive record at the Wanda Metropolitano. Lokomotiv are on a good goalscoring run themselves but they may find themselves stifled by improving Atletico.
Key stats
- Atletico Madrid have kept four clean sheets in their last five home games
- Both teams have scored in just three of Atletico's last ten matches
- Lokomotiv have scored in each of their last 11 games
Bayern Munich v RB Salzburg
Where to watch
BT Sport 3, 8pm Wednesday
Best bet
More goals to be scored in the second half
2pts Evs Betway
Match preview
Bayern Munich raised expectation levels almost impossibly high during last season's Champions League as they thrashed Barcelona 8-2 on their way to the trophy.
There has been no sense of anti-climax to the defence of their title, though, as Hansi Flick's men have demolished Atletico Madrid 4-0, won 2-1 at Lokomotiv Moscow and thumped RB Salzburg 6-2 in their first three group games.
The clash in Austria was level at 2-2 before Bayern scored four times in the last 11 minutes and their ability to cut apart tiring defences points to a bet on there being more goals in the second half than the first at the Allianz Arena.
Bayern dropped points in the Bundesliga at the weekend with a rare draw against Werder Bremen but Salzburg also suffered a domestic setback, going down 3-1 at home to Sturm Graz with all four goals coming after the break.
Key stats
- Bayern Munich have won their last 14 Champions League matches
- Salzburg's last five games have featured 16 second-half goals
- Bayern have conceded in each of their last four victories
Inter Milan v Real Madrid
Where to watch
BT Sport ESPN, 8pm Wednesday
Best bet
2-2 correct score
1pt 11-1 bet365
Match preview
Inter and Real Madrid have been delighting backers of both teams to score this season and their clash at the Bernabeu on matchday three lived up to the hype.
La Liga champions Real won 3-2 thanks to an 80th-minute winner from Rodrygo after Inter had come from 2-0 down to make it 2-2.
The Nerazzurri staged a more successful comeback in Serie A at the weekend, scoring four times in the last half-hour of their 4-2 win over Torino, and another high-scoring thriller looks likely at San Siro.
Both Inter and Real have shared 2-2 draws with Borussia Monchengladbach in this section and Zinedine Zidane's men suffered a shock 3-2 home defeat to Lokomotiv Moscow in their other game.
Real lack the personnel to play defensively – they were beaten 4-1 by Valencia recently – so an entertaining draw is the bet.
Key stats
- Both teams have scored in nine of Inter's 11 games this season
- Four of Inter's last six home Champions League matches have ended in score draws
- Real Madrid are without a clean sheet in eight games
Marseille v Porto
Where to watch
BT Sport Extra 5, 8pm Wednesday
Best bet
Porto
1pt 8-5 bet365, Betfair, Betway
Match preview
Porto have made a solid start to their Champions League campaign, taking an early lead in their 3-1 defeat away to Manchester City before home wins over Olympiakos (2-0) and Marseille (3-0).
Another victory in the reverse fixture in France would put them in a very strong position and at the prices they are worth backing to claim three points.
Marseille's return to the Champions League has been a miserable experience so far and coach Andre Villas-Boas slammed his side's performance in Portugal as "pathetic".
OM have won their last three Ligue 1 games but they have lost all three group games, failing to score a single goal, and their losing run in the Champions League now stretches to 12 matches, dating back to 2012. Given Marseille's dodgy defence, free-scoring Porto may well make it 13 in a row on matchday four.
Key stats
- None of Marseille's last five matches have featured goals at both ends
- Porto have scored at least twice in 14 of their last 17 matches
- Marseille have not kept a clean sheet in their last eight home games
