Shakhtar Donetsk v Real Madrid | Atletico Madrid v Bayern Munich
Best bets and predictions for Tuesday's group matches in the Uefa Champions League.
Shakhtar Donetsk v Real Madrid
Where to watch
BT Sport 1, 5.55pm Tuesday
Best bet
Real Madrid -1 goal on handicap
1pt 20-23 BoyleSports
Match preview
Zinedine Zidane has been left scratching his head over Real Madrid's form in La Liga but they have been fairly reliable in Europe this season and should get the better of out-of-sorts Shakhtar Donetsk.
The Ukrainian hosts have been hit hard by injuries and enforced absences due to Covid-19 this term and they will be without Yevhen Konoplyanka, Davit Khocholava, Dentinho, Viktor Korniienko and Ismaily for this contest.
That does not bode well for a side who have lost their last two Champions League games by a combined 10-0 to Borussia Monchengladbach and even a tweaked Real front line should rack up the goals.
Los Blancos lost the reverse fixture 3-2 but will likely start Karim Benzema this time and they should be full of confidence after successive wins over Inter. Back the Spaniards at -1 goal on the handicap, meaning they need to win by at least two.
Key stats
- Real Madrid have scored at least twice in every Champions League game this season
- Shakhtar have won none of their last three Champions League games
- Shakhtar have failed to score in their last three games in this competition
Lokomotiv Moscow v Salzburg
Where to watch
BT Sport ESPN, 5.55pm Tuesday
Best bet
S Koita to score at any time
1pt 11-10 Betfair, Paddy Power
Match preview
From highly sought-after midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai to striker Patson Daka, Salzburg have a number of top players who know where the net is and the latest to announce himself is Malian forward Sekou Koita.
The 21-year-old fired a 19-minute hat-trick from the bench against St Polten at the weekend and, expected to feature in Moscow, he could be a good anytime goalscorer bet.
He has 11 goals in 17 appearances this season and can cause plenty of problems for a Lokomotiv side who have been struggling domestically, winning only seven of their 16 league matches and were outplayed in the reverse fixture.
That game finished 2-2 but Salzburg had 15 shots compared to Lokomotiv's five and the Austrians saw more of the ball. They should be confident of getting something from the game but backing Koita to notch at odds-against is the best bet.
Key stats
- Lokomotiv Moscow have lost four of their last five home Champions League ties
- Lokomotiv Moscow are winless in their last nine games in this competition
- Salzburg's last six Champions League games, including qualifiers, have seen both teams score
Borussia Monchengladbach v Inter Milan
Where to watch
BT Sport Extra 2, 8pm Tuesday
Best bet
Borussia Monchengladbach
1pt 21-10 Betway, BoyleSports, Hills
Match preview
Borussia Monchengladbach have exceeded expectations in this term's Champions League, taking initiative in a tough group comprised of Real Madrid, Shakhtar Donetsk and Inter.
Although they were title contenders in Serie A last season, Inter have looked like the minnows of this group, failing to win any of their opening four games.
Gladbach, on the other hand, are top with two wins and two draws, having thumped Shakhtar Donetsk 4-0 and 6-0 in their last two European affairs.
They followed that up with a 4-1 mauling of Schalke at the weekend and Alassane Plea and Breel Embolo should thrive against Inter at Borussia-Park, where they are unbeaten in the league this term.
Inter will be without suspended Arturo Vidal for this one and spirits will be low after successive losses to Real Madrid.
Key stats
- Inter's last away win against a German side in any European competition came in 2011
- Inter have conceded two or more goals in three of their four games
- Only Bayern Munich have scored more than Glabach’s 14 Champions League goals in the group stage this season
Marseille v Olympiakos
Where to watch
BT Sport Extra 4, 8pm Tuesday
Best bet
Olympiakos draw no bet
1pt 6-5 general
Match preview
Marseille's run of 13 successive defeats in the Champions League is the longest in the competition's history and the Ligue 1 side could lack the incentive to buck that trend against Olympiakos.
With four defeats from four games, the French outfit can no longer qualify for the knockout stage and even the slim hope of dropping into the Europa League could be extinguished at the Stade Velodrome this week.
They are the only side yet to score in this year's competition, managing only six shots on target in total in the group stage, with Dario Benedetto out of form and they are not helped at the back by the absence of Leonardo Balerdi through suspension.
Olympiakos nicked three points in the reverse fixture in Piraeus but they have been in good form domestically and can secure third spot with maximum points against Andre Villas Boas's men.
Key stats
- Marseille have lost their last 13 Champions League games
- Marseille boss Andre Villas-Boas has lost each of his last seven games in this competition
- The three Champions League meetings between the teams have finished 1-0
Atletico Madrid v Bayern Munich
Where to watch
BT Sport ESPN, 8pm Tuesday
Best bet
Atletico Madrid
1pt Evs Hills
Match preview
Having already booked their spot in the last 16, Bayern Munich have the luxury of being able to rest players against Atletico Madrid and that could play into the hands of the hosts.
Hansi Flick has confirmed Manuel Neuer, Leon Goretzka and Robert Lewandowski will be rested for this contest and a much-changed Bayern line-up gives Atletico the chance to make amends for their 4-0 thrashing in the reverse fixture.
Atletico have looked much tighter at the back since that defeat and are on a run of four consecutive clean sheets in all competitions, shutting out Cadiz, Barcelona, Lokomotiv Moscow and Valencia.
Even with a string of injuries, they can still call on Joao Felix and Angel Correa at the other end as well and they have been strong at the Wanda Metropolitano this term with four wins and a draw from five matches. Punters should look at backing the Spaniards at even money.
Key stats
- Atletico haven't lost any of their last 20 home games in all competitions
- Each of Bayern's last seven games have seen both teams score
- Atletico have won nine of their last 11 home Champions League games
Atalanta v Midtjylland
Where to watch
BT Sport Extra 3, 8pm Tuesday
Best bet
Over 3.5 goals
1pt 10-11 bet365, Betfred, Betway
Match preview
Atalanta pulled off a stunning 2-0 win against Liverpool at Anfield in their last Champions League encounter but their brittle defence has often cancelled out their barnstorming attack this season.
They were hammered 5-0 by Liverpool in the reverse fixture and drew 2-2 with Ajax beforehand while in the Italian top flight Atalanta have a far from ideal 4-2-4 record.
La Dea are blessed with the likes of Alejandro Gomez, Josip Ilicic and Duvan Zapata among others in the final third but having failed to beat Spezia and Verona in the last two games, punters should look away from results markets.
Instead backing goals could be the way to go - Atalanta's nine league assignments have seen 34 goals and three of their four Champions League group games have produced over 3.5 goals, which could be the best bet in Bergamo.
Key stats
- Five of Atalanta’s six Champions League games on Italian soil have seen them concede
- Atalanta have scored 25 times in their last 12 Champions League matches
- Atalanta have conceded 15 times in their last six home games in all competitions
