Unless something remarkable happens there is about to be a new individual name on the Champions League top seasonal goalscorer list for the first time since Kaka in 2007.

For 12 years in a row at least one of Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi has finished as the leading marksman (they both shared it with Neymar in 2015) but this time Robert Lewandowski is a red-hot favourite following his ten-goal haul in this season's group stage.

Never say never with Ronaldo and Messi but they will need to go some to catch Bayern's penalty-box predator.

Ronaldo scored twice for Juventus in the group stage and Messi matched that for Barcelona, leaving them at 150-1 and 20-1 respectively to launch the mother of all comebacks.

Eight-goal Erling Haaland has made the switch to Borussia Dortmund from the eliminated Salzburg but he will need the Germans to go far and that is unlikely with a last-16 date against Paris St-Germain.

PSG's Kylian Mbappe, a 33-1 shot, definitely has the class to rack up the goals, although giving Lewandowski a five-goal start is obviously not ideal.

Bayern Munich’s hotshot should oblige for punters who followed Racing Post Sport’s advice and backed him at 14-1 ante-post.
