Preview

Liverpool have reached the final of two of the last four Champions Leagues and have fair excuses for their failures in the last two campaigns.

Two years ago backup keeper Adrian’s error led to Atletico Madrid beating the Reds at Anfield in extra time. Then last season Liverpool were knocked out by Real Madrid with a centre back pairing of Ozan Kabak and Nat Phillips.

With Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez back this year and the signing of Ibrahim Konate, Jurgen Klopp’s side have improved their defence hand over fist. The return of their defensive talisman Van Dijk also frees up the likes of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson to move back into their preferred position in midfield.

Diogo Jota gives Liverpool a different element going forward and with fans back at Anfield, they can help the Reds to go deep in this year’s competition.

Klopp’s side do face a tricky group, with Milan, Atletico Madrid and Porto but they have proven that they can come through difficult groups in their previous Champions League campaigns.

Liverpool are available to buy at 32 with Spreadex on the outright index and back to full strength this season that could prove a wise investment.

Another team it may be worth siding with is Atalanta, the Italian side were knocked out at the quarter-final stage by Paris Saint Germain in 2019-20 and then lost to Real Madrid in the round of 32 last season.

With a slightly easier group than on those two occasions, they have the potential to win their section granting them an easier passage through the knockout stages than in previous years.

Atalanta have built their reputation on shrewd business in the transfer window and have added smartly once more this summer. Robin Gosens and Joachim Maehle provide the width in this side, while the creative Ruslan Malinovskyi led Serie A in assists last season.

Atalanta are available to buy with Spreadex at 17 and that could underestimate this progressive side.
