Champions League matchday three predictions

Athletic Bilbao vs Qarabag

The odds in the first of Wednesday's early kick-offs suggests Athletic Bilbao should see off Qarabag with ease.

However, the Azerbaijani visitors are a perfect two from two in the Champions League while the Basque outfit are still searching for a point, so taking Qarabag in the double-chance market could be worth considering.

Galatasaray vs Bodo/Glimt

Galatasaray and Bodo/Glimt both pulled off surprises in the last round, with the Turkish side beating Liverpool 1-0 and Bodo earning a well-deserved point against Tottenham, and the in-form pair may be tough to split in Istanbul.

Real Madrid vs Juventus

Real Madrid finished Champions League matchday two sitting second in the table and they are going great guns on all fronts under Xabi Alonso, leading the way in La Liga after Sunday’s 1-0 win at Getafe.

The ludicrous decision-making of Allan Nyom certainly helped matters - the former West Brom defender chose to perform a wrestling move on Vinicius Junior while the ball was in another postcode.

Madrid took the lead only after Nyom's dismissal but that made it ten wins in 11 and they are hard to oppose against an out-of-sorts Juventus.

Juve’s winless run was extended to six by Sunday’s 2-0 loss at Cesc Fabregas’s Como and they look set for a tough time at the Bernabeu, where Madrid have won nine straight games.

Another Madrid home win is on the cards, although with one eye on Sunday’s El Clasico they may take their foot off the gas should they take the lead, so backing under 3.5 goals to increase the payout may be wise.

Stopping Kylian Mbappe will be key to Juventus’s game-plan but given that the French ace has scored 15 goals in his last 11 matches for club and country, that may prove a difficult task.

Mbappe should have an impact but he is a short price to score and instead it could pay to back a Juve defender to be booked, with his pace likely to cause the Turin side all sorts of issues.

Only Ajax’s Ko Itakura (seven) had committed more fouls than Lloyd Kelly’s six after two Champions League matchdays and the former Newcastle man, who has been booked twice in his last five appearances, looks a big price to pick up another card.

Bayern Munich vs Club Brugge

Three points from two games is a solid return for Club Brugge but it is still hard to see them preventing Bayern Munich, the league-phase leaders after Matchday Two, running riot.

The Bavarians have scored 35 goals while winning all nine of their Bundesliga and Champions League games and Vincent Kompany's side should give Brugge a bruising.

Sporting vs Marseille

Sporting’s only win in three came via Sunday’s extra-time victory over second-tier Pacos Ferreira and their price looks far too short for the visit of Marseille.

Roberto De Zerbi’s visitors won 6-2 on Saturday to extend a winning run, which began with a 1-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain, to five games.

And having routed Ajax 4-0 in their last Champions League outing, Marseille are worth siding with in Lisbon.

Atalanta vs Slavia Prague

Slavia Prague opened their Champions League campaign with a solid 2-2 draw against Bodo/Glimt, but they were woeful in a 3-0 defeat at Inter last time.

Without a win in three games, it is hard to see Slavia finding any joy against Atalanta, who are unbeaten in five matches.
