Champions League matchday four predictions

There are nine more Champions League games to enjoy on Wednesday, with Club Brugge's visit from Barcelona and Bayer Leverkusen's trip to Jose Mourinho's Benfica among the standout fixtures to not feature an English side.

Pafos vs Villarreal

Villarreal are languishing towards the bottom of the league-phase standings but a tricky trio of fixtures against Tottenham, Juventus and Manchester City is largely to blame for that.

Marcelino's side should build on the one point they gained from those games in Limassol, where they take on a Pafos side who have failed to find the net in two of their three Champions League games.

The Yellow Submarine have won their last three games without conceding, scoring 12 goals in the process, and should finally get their European campaign up and running in smooth-sailing fashion.

Club Brugge vs Barcelona

Three losses in six games will frustrate Hansi Flick but one of those came in El Clasico and another was inflicted by Paris Saint-Germain, so his Barcelona side should find things much easier in Belgium.

Club Brugge have failed to build on their 4-1 rout of Monaco, losing their two subsequent Champions League games, and a 4-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in their last European outing suggests they could be hit hard by a rampant Barca.

Flick's side thrashed Olympiakos 6-1 on matchday three and Brugge's injury list means the door is open for another comfortable success, with goalkeeper Simon Mignolet and all-action defensive midfielder Raphael Onyedika the two most significant absentees.

Marcus Rashford, like so many others, has thrived since leaving Manchester United and is in fine form, having scored four goals in his last five Barca appearances.

The England forward has already scored a couple of Champions League braces this season, putting two past both Newcastle and Olympiakos, and is a huge price to punish a shaky and injury-hit Brugge backline.

Marseille vs Atalanta

On the way to lifting the trophy, Atalanta beat Marseille 4-1 on aggregate in the 2023-24 Europa League. However, the Bergamo outfit are without a win in six, making them underdogs for this clash.

Five of those six games finished level, though, and with the pair separated by only a point, a sharing of the spoils could be on the cards at Stade Velodrome.

Benfica vs Bayer Leverkusen

Despite being a two-time Champions League winner, Jose Mourinho has yet to taste victory in his second spell as Benfica manager, going down 1-0 at his former side Chelsea before a 3-0 hammering in Newcastle.

The Portuguese giants start the round second-bottom, having also lost to Qarabag before Mourinho's return, and look a short price given that Bayer Leverkusen's only losses under Kasper Hjulmand have come against PSG and Bayern Munich.

Inter vs Kairat Almaty

One point from three matches is probably as good as Kairat Almaty could have hoped for in their debut Champions League campaign, but a 5-0 hammering from Real Madrid and 4-1 loss at Sporting suggests a trip to Milan might be one to forget for the Kazakh minnows.

Inter have opened with three wins and three clean sheets, so this should be straightforward for last season's runners-up.

Ajax vs Galatasaray

Three losses and a dreadful -10 goal difference means Ajax are propping up the league-phase standings, with things unlikely to get any better against a Galatasaray side sitting pretty on six points.

Sandwiched between Gala's 5-1 loss to Frankfurt and a 3-1 win over the same Bodo/Glimt side which drew 2-2 with Tottenham is an impressive 1-0 victory over Liverpool.

The Turkish giants are reaping the rewards for their summer spending spree – Victor Osimhen's loan being made permanent and the signing of German international Leroy Sane were among the standout deals – and they should have no issue making it seven wins from nine in Amsterdam.
