Aston Villa vs PSG predictions

Paris St-Germain knocked out Liverpool at Anfield in the Champions League round of 16 and Luis Enrique's men return to England aiming for a repeat performance against their quarter-final opponents Aston Villa.

Premier League leaders Liverpool were unable to build on their fortunate 1-0 away win over PSG, losing on penalties after Ousmane Dembele's early goal earned the visitors a 1-0 victory on Merseyside.

Villa face an even tougher task, having lost 3-1 in Paris last week, and whatever approach they take in the second leg will be fraught with danger.

Backing over 1.5 second-half goals looks a solid bet at Villa Park as the hosts do most of their scoring after the break and PSG have the attacking tools to take advantage once the game opens up.

Enrique's side racked up 26 shots in January's 4-2 league-phase victory over Manchester City, when all six goals came in the second half.

They had 27 attempts at goal to Liverpool's two in the last-16 first-leg defeat and won the shot count 29-7 in last week's victory over Villa.

There is a relentlessness to PSG's midfield and attacking unit that suggests a first European crown could be on the cards and they are unlikely to ease up until the job is done at Villa Park.

PSG have a clean bill of health for the second leg and captain Marquinhos should return to the heart of their defence after missing last week's win due to suspension.

It is no surprise that they look so fresh and sharp given that they have sealed the Ligue 1 title with six games to spare, winning 23 and drawing five of their first 28 matches.

They had a free weekend to prepare for the second leg while Villa, in the thick of the qualification race for next season's Champions League, won 3-0 at the Premier League's bottom club Southampton.

All three goals came from substitutes in the final 20 minutes and PSG loanee Marco Asensio missed two penalties at St Mary's.

More ruthlessness will be required from Unai Emery's side if they are to defy odds of 9-1 and make the semi-finals.

Whatever the outcome, Villa Park should expect plenty of late drama. Emery's men have racked up four 3-0 wins in their last six matches, against Club Brugge, Preston, Brighton and Southampton, and all 12 of those goals were scored in the second half.

Both managers have exciting attacking options on the bench – Asensio, Ollie Watkins, Goncalo Ramos and Bradley Barcola were among the substitutes unleashed in the first leg – and Villa's Champions League campaign could end with a bang.
