Preview

Rangers deserve all the praise going for a pair of magical awaydays this year but they are very hard to fancy heading off to Ajax for their Group A opener.

Light Blues diehards still get shivers up the spine thinking about last season's remarkable win in Dortmund so they probably weren't too surprised when they did another hatchet job on the road at PSV just last month.

However, the wheels came off at Celtic on Saturday as the Gers were thumped 4-0 to leave a bitter taste as they make the short hop over to Amsterdam.

And make no bones about it, that loss at Parkhead was embarrassing.

Gio van Bronckhorst's tactics and selection were questioned, he's also missing one or two big players, and one or two others arguably aren't up to it.

And the fear is that if Ajax get off to a flyer – and they are relentlessly positive, especially on home soil – they could take the Scottish side apart.

Except of course, and it's impossible to ignore, those nights in Dortmund and nearby Eindhoven demonstrate exactly what the Gers can be capable of, especially when they are being written off.

With Liverpool and Napoli in the group this is pretty much a must-win for both clubs so expect intent from the pair of them.

Ajax will look to veteran aces Steven Bergwijn, Steven Berghuis and Dusan Tadic to carve their way through a suspect Rangers defence and should, on the evidence of last weekend, strike gold.

Key stat

Ajax have scored at least two goals in nine of their last ten competitive matches
