James Shan tasted defeat for the first time as West Brom caretaker boss at Millwall on Saturday and his future could be thrown into question with defeat away to Bristol City.

The Baggies scored an own goal, were reduced to ten men and lost the shot count in the 2-0 defeat at the Den, which all but ended their hopes of landing an automatic promotion berth.

They are seven points off the top two despite winning three successive matches under their new boss prior to that game.

But the Midlands outfit were hard-pressed in victory over Birmingham and outplayed in their win away to Brentford, losing the shot count 13-11 and amassing only 35 per cent possession.

Inexperienced Shan now faces the challenge of motivating a set of players who must adjust to settling for a playoff place and Ashton Gate is not an ideal next destination.

Bristol City have taken seven points from three matches in the space of a week and the chirping Robins can take confidence from the nature of their recent results.

Lee Johnson's men slayed Sheffield United 3-2 at the end of March before dealing Middlesbrough's promotion hopes a hammer blow on Teesside.

The competition for places is fierce in the City side, with Kasey Palmer and Niclas Eliasson looking lively off the bench last time out.

There is arguably less pressure on Johnson's side heading into this clash and they can take the spoils in the potential playoff rehearsal.
