With a two-horse title race unfolding in Argentina’s Primera Division, Boca Juniors are emerging as the most likely side to land the third Copa Libertadores group-stage place behind Racing and Defensa y Justicia.

They can tighten their grip on third spot by beating the side below them, Atletico Tucuman, on home soil.

The hosts are on a six-match unbeaten run in the Argentinian top flight courtesy of their wealth of attacking options ranging from the ever-reliable Dario Benedetto and Cristian Pavon to experienced duo Carlos Tevez and Mauro Zarate.

Boca flexed their goalscoring muscle in a 4-0 thumping of San Martin at the start of the month and should rise to the occasion in this fiercer test against a permeable Tucuman defence.

The away side’s pursuit of a European berth has suffered a setback after three successive matches without scoring, two of which were 3-0 defeats against lowly Patronato and a Union outfit locked in mid-table obscurity.

Boca’s title challenge may be slipping away but the Primera Division victors of the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons know what it takes to stay near the top.

Opponents Tucuman, meanwhile, could muster only 15th spot last term and they may have to look to their next match at home to basement side Argentinos Juniors to kick-start a revival.
