Celtic suffered a shock defeat on their only previous visit to Kazakhstan and their inexperi­enced Champions League opponents Astana can inflict more misery on the Bhoys today.

The Kazakhstan champions boast a better recent European record than their Scottish opponents and Astana are hoping to reach the group stage for the second consecutive season.

They have proved formidable at home in their short time in the Champions League, winning four of their seven home games and losing none. Hard-fought draws against Atletico Madrid, Benfica and Galatasaray in last year’s group stage should have filled Stanimir Stoilov’s side with plenty of belief.
