Danish Superliga

Danish champions Midtjylland were held to a goalless draw at home by Aarhus on the opening weekend of the season and their trip to a well-organised Aalborg may once again see defences come to the fore.

The title holders, who lost just five of their 36 matches on way to dethroning Copenhagen, were left frustrated against Aarhus in their curtain-raiser and could struggle to dominate an Aalborg outfit who are often set up not to lose.

Aalborg were Denmark’s draw specialists last season, sharing the spoils in 15 of their 36 league encounters, and their defensive qualities were highlighted during their opening hard-fought 1-0 win over Sonderjyske.

The hosts rode their luck at times but were ultimately worthy winners, edging the shot count 11-7 and forcing seven corners.

However, it was also evident that Aalborg still look short of sting up front. Morten Wieghorst’s men notched just 38 times in 36 league games last season and their lack of firepower could hinder any European aspirations.

Jannik Pohl was their leading marksman with only eight goals and their concerns up top may be highlighted against the champions.

Midtjylland kept clean sheets on 13 occasions last season, shutting out the goal-shy hosts in two of their three meetings.

However, Midtjylland travel to Kazakhstan to face Astana in Champions League qualifying next week and that could see Jess Thorup ring the changes.

An early-season duel can be difficult to call and banking on a shortage of goals makes most appeal.
