Match preview

Sydney’s inexorable march towards the Premiers Plate has suffered just two hold-ups during a hugely satisfying campaign – but those two losses have added even more tension going into the third and final derby of the regular season.

Sydney’s sole reverses were a pair of 1-0 defeats meted out by none other than their cross-city rivals Western Sydney.

Neither setback looks to have cost Sydney, though they will be desperate to avoid a third straight loss at the hands of the Wanderers.

But that won’t be easy, even at an empty Bankwest Stadium.

The runaway A-League leaders boast a 22-point edge over Wanderers, but the 5-2 shots have been re-energised under caretaker boss Jean-Paul de Marigny and are worth a nibble with the draw taken out of the equation.

It’s just one defeat in six since De Marigny replaced Markus Babbel in January and he has brought a fight and a passion which had been missing.

A 3-4-1-2 set-up appears to be bringing the best out of ex-Mainz and Hamburg schemer Nicolai Muller, while skipper Mitch Duke, the man who scored the winners in each of the two previous derbies, is a major threat.

Former Reading frontman Simon Cox is being backed by his boss to start hitting the net soon after recently arriving from Southend and another ex-Royal, 16-goal Adam Le Fondre, will be key to the Sky Blues nicking something from their hop across town.
