Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Lyon and Barcelona all fire Champions League blanks

No goals in first legs at Anfield and Parc OL was a 322-1 double

Plenty of pundits and fans were predicting a flurry of goals at Anfield on Tuesday when the power-packed attacks of Liverpool and Bayern Munich clashed, but it turned out to be a night of tension and wasted chances as the teams were forced to settle for a goalless draw in their Champions League Last 16 first leg.

And it was a similar story in France, where Lyon and Barcelona also finished 0-0 with Barca failing to convert any of their 25 shots on goal.

Liverpool will head to Germany on March 13 with the tie on a knife-edge - most bookmakers make it a pick 'em bet to advance to the quarter finals with both teams available at 10-11 to go through.

Jurgen Klopp was happy with Liverpool's performance and the clean sheet, especially as key central defender Virgil van Dyke was suspended.

"It was a clean sheet without the big man. A lot of people wouldn't have expected that. The defending was good. A lot of things were really good", he told BT Sport after the game.

Despite a well-organised performance Bayern did not manage a shot on goal and striker Robert Lewandowski - the Champions League's top scorer - added: "We'll need to score if we want to get into the next round. I hope we can play better at home."

Barcelona are strong favourites at 1-5 in the betting to advance to the next round despite their goalless draw in France, and they have have now drawn four of their last five games in all competitions.

They have not won any of their last six Champions League knockout games away from home and failed to score in five of them, although they usually make up for it at Camp Nou.

No goalscorer at Anfield was available at odds of 16-1 and Lyon 18-1, making an unlikely double a 322-1 shot.
