Focused Waring can outscore playing partners

Englishman relishes the Victoria layout

David Lingmerth is making his Portugal Masters debut

Sky Sports Golf, 11.30am Thursday

Birkenhead boy Paul Waring has shown a liking in the past for the Victoria course, the Portugal Masters venue, and he can be fancied to win Thursday's 1.10pm first-round threeball against David Lingmerth and Jaco Ahlers.

Bookmakers have handed favouritism to US Tour regular Lingmerth but the Florida-based Swede has been in humdrum form and may be treating this European sortie as a vacation rather than a serious business trip. This is his course debut, so he may take time to settle.

Waring, competing on a medical exemption this season after a wrist injury and shoulder reconstruction, gives 100 per cent to every event.

He was second in the Joburg Open in February and third in the Hassan Trophy in April, so has stabilised his career nicely.

Waring is well suited to the Victoria and had a golden chance of victory in 2013, before finishing third. His subsequent visits have yielded form figures of 12-22.

South African journeyman Ahlers, also a Victoria debutant, has never made an impact outside his home continent.
