Ferrer can continue to show his love for Auckland courts
Fognini may have the fitness to trouble Dolgopolov
It would not be a surprise to see David Ferrer enjoy a decent final campaign in 2018 and the Spanish veteran merits plenty of respect on his season-opening visit to his beloved Auckland Classic.
Ferrer is due to meet Joao Sousa (11.30pm Tuesday) for a place in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open prep event and the Costa Blancan has such a fine record at the Parnell venue that he could be value at a shade of odds-on.
Sousa represents Portugal with pride but in terms of class he is not a patch on Ferrer, who could fare better this season than last, after which he dropped to 38th in the world rankings.
In Sydney, Fabio Fognini has been happy with his pre-season training and the Italian could cause problems for Alexandr Dolgopolov (rescheduled for 3am Wednesday).
World number 27 Fognini is 4-6 to win at least a set and that can be taken after pleasing coach Franco Davin in recent weeks.
