Ferraris value to be real deal in Montreal qualifying

Hamilton yet to get to grips with hypersoft tyres

Sebastian Vettel is driving an upgraded Ferrari this weekend

Canadian Grand Prix qualifying
Sky Sports F1, 7pm Saturday

Canadian Grand Prix qualifying takes place in a primetime veiwing slot on Saturday evening and it looks well worth that billing this year.

As in the Premier League, an elite group of six look to be clear of the rest of the field but picking between them for the one-lap shootout in Montreal is not easy.

The Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton would be favourite for the race if it started tonight. He has shown the best pace on the two harder tyre compounds in use this weekend. But he has yet to look happy on the hypersoft tyre that will be used in the third qualifying session and that's enough to be wary of him at 6-5 to be the fastest qualifier.

Hamilton couldn't get to grips with the softest compound in Monaco last time out and, while using one of the other tyres in Q2 will give him the chance of a strong race strategy (and the opportunity not to use the hypersoft at all tomorrow if he wishes) it hands an advantage to the Red Bull and Ferrari drivers in the final qualifying session.

The top dogs finished in a pack in third practice, with Max Verstappen staying just ahead and a case can be made for the daring Dutchman staying out in front.

But when it looks more of a lottery than usual buying two tickets makes sense and the preferred bet for qualifying is to back either of the Ferraris to take pole at 6-4 with Sky Bet.

Sebastian Vettel had a slow start to the weekend as the team got used to a number of upgrades they have brought to Canada but he was only a whisker behind Verstappen in final practice. He is a 2-1 shot for pole, but the qualifying winning team/car market gives you Kimi Raikkonen on your side too at the cost of just half a point.

The Finn was also right on Verstappen's tail in the first Saturday session and the high-speed track suits his mentality.

It still looks like it should be Hamilton's day on Sunday, but the scarlet cars may be the better bet for qualifying.
