England can end their bitterly disappointing European Under-21 Championship campaign on a minor high by beating Croatia as Aidy Boothroyd bids to save his job.

Boothroyd has never truly convinced in the role of guiding England's next generation and criticism reached a new high on Friday as they were dumped out of the competition following a kamikaze 4-2 loss to Romania.

The unbeaten Romanians scored all of their goals in the last 15 minutes despite having just 27 per cent possession in the 90 minutes.

Individual errors cost England in the main, although Boothroyd's bizarre decision to rest Phil Foden and Aaron Wan-Bissaka backfired.

The boss needs a win, so presumably England will get something like their best 11 back on the pitch and that should be too good for Croatia.

Croatia are also already eliminated following a 4-1 defeat to Romania and a 1-0 loss to France in which they failed to muster a shot on target.

The potential for a carve-up is obvious in the other Group C game as a draw suits both France and Romania in their quest to make the semi-finals.

Backing the draw at odds-on is not advised but at the same time it is difficult to work up much enthusiasm for a positive result.

Either nation could be eliminated with a defeat and therefore the natural approach from both is likely to be to concentrate on keeping a clean sheet.
