France to beat Germany
France-Portugal straight forecast
Tuesday is when Group F starts to take shape, when Germany take on world champions France, and I haven't got a great feeling about it.
It's in Munich and I don't think home advantage does us any harm. And I'm not a huge fan of Hugo Lloris – I see a mistake or two in him.
But those are the positives from a German perspective and there aren’t too many more.
I don't fancy Germany to spring a surprise because these teams are a long way apart at the moment.
Take the keeper out of the question and France have got one of the best defences in the tournament, arguably the best midfield and arguably the best attack. And we haven't even discussed the options off the bench if they need them.
They are streets ahead of Germany in terms of depth and it breaks my heart to think that only one player who helped us win the European Under-21s in 2017 has found his way into this squad. Just one. That's Serge Gnabry. These have been four wasted years.
Joachim Low should have taken Florian Wirtz yet has selected the likes of Jonas Hofmann, Robin Koch and Emre Can who won't play.
There's a gulf between France and Germany at the moment and I just hope that we can stay competitive but I've got doubts that Low will play the right team. For example, Leon Goretzka has to be in and Kai Havertz has to play through the middle, but I don't see either happening.
Clutching at straws, if we do lose as I suspect we will, Low will hopefully see the light before we take on Portugal and make the changes.
And, of course, Portugal are really strong. I think both they and France will beat Hungary which would see the French on six points after two games. Back them to win the group because they are playing us at the right time.
