Third ODI preview
Being forced to select a entirely new squad due to Covid isolation protocols has only served to highlight the strength in depth available to England in white-ball cricket.
England's new faces were again superb on Saturday, defending 247 at Lord's to wrap up their three-match against Pakistan with a match to spare.
Star of the show was Somerset all-rounder Lewis Gregory, who shared a record eighth-wicket stand in a Lord's ODI with Brydon Carse to haul England to a respectable total before taking 3-44 with the ball.
Gregory's first victim came with just the seventh ball of the Pakistan innings, which was only marginally better than the tourists managed in the first ODI in Cardiff on Thursday when they lost Imam ul-Haq to the first ball of the match.
Imam and opening partner Fakhar Zaman have looked far from assured against England's new-ball attack in the two matches and it would be no surprise to see Gregory and Saqib Mahmood make early inroads again at Edgbaston.
It's 10-11 your choice about which side has the highest opening partnership and England's new-ball potency is just one reason to think that the hosts are the bet in that market.
Home openers Phil Salt and Dawid Malan have both hit half-centuries in the series and while the other has failed to fire when the other has hit their straps that may change in Birmingham.
They certainly look in better nick that Imam or Fakhar, who have posted opening stands of nought and one so far.
