England Lionesses can beat Russia with ease
Women's World Cup qualifier
BBC2, 7pm Tuesday
England's women did well to reach the semi-finals of this summer's European Championship and they can make a bright start on the road to World Cup 2019 by beating Russia at Prenton Park.
Only the sectional winners will qualify automatically for the finals in France and the battle for supremacy in Group One is likely to boil down to a head-to-head between England and the Russians, who were knocked out at the group stage at the Euros.
Russia's best efforts at a World Cup were runs to the quarter-finals in 1999 and 2003 but they failed to qualify for 2007, 2011 and 2015.
Their struggles at Euro 2017 – where they lost 2-0 to Sweden and Germany and won 2-1 against Italy – were no great surprise and it will be tough for them against an England team eager to atone for their 3-0 loss to Holland in the semi-finals.
Head coach Mark Sampson cannot call on Arsenal defender Alex Scott, who has retired from international football, but he has named a strong and experienced squad and should steer the Lionesses to a comfortable victory.
