Bookmakers were relieved to avoid a 5-0 Australia clean sweep in the Test series against England but the boot is on the other foot for the Aussies in the one-dayers.

A brilliant seventh-wicket partnership between Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes, backed up by an impressive bowling display, secured England a 16-run win in Sydney on Sunday and gave them an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-ODI contest.

Buttler, who ended the innings unbeaten on 100, was 11-1 to top-score with Betfair and Paddy Power.

The 5-0 England whitewash is now 11-4 with Sky Bet, having been 40-1 at the start of the series, and Eoin Morgan’s entertainers are 7-2 favourites for the 2019 World Cup, which takes place in England and Wales.

Australia, who won the 2015 World Cup on home turf and are 4-1 second-favourites to retain their crown next year, have been in patchy one-day form of late.

However, they were still 4-11 favourites at the start of the series so winning the first three ODIs must be regarded as an excellent effort from England, especially given the absence of Ben Stokes.

They showed plenty of character and adaptability at the SCG as Buttler and Woakes hauled them from 189-6 to 302-6 before Joe Root was forced to fill in for Liam Plunkett, who bowled only eight deliveries before going off injured.

The fourth ODI starts early on Friday morning in Adelaide and bet365 can’t split the teams, with both sides available to back at 10-11.
