World number eight Karolina Pliskova has struggled to make an impact this season and her inconsistencies could be highlighted in her New Haven curtain-raiser against Ekaterina Makarova.

The classy Czech has been a second-round casualty in Montreal and Cincinnati this month and is proving difficult to trust at short prices.

Makarova has won three of their previous four meetings - each of her victories has come on a hard court - and she was a quarter-finalist in Connecticut two seasons ago.

The Russian is a quality performer who will punish below-par performances and her run to the last 16 in Cincinnati last week suggests she could be about to strike.

This could be a closely-fought encounter and Makarova makes plenty of appeal on the handicap.

Yuichi Sugita is another in horrible form and his poor run looks set to continue at the hands of the experienced Leonardo Mayer in the first round at Winston-Salem.

The Japanese performer is winless in five matches - he lost in the opening round in Washington and Toronto in straight sets - and has tasted defeat both times he has come up against his Argentinian challenger.

Mayer is in considerably better shape. He was a beaten finalist on the Hamburg clay in July and wasn't disgraced in defeat to the superior Roger Federer in the third round in Cincinnati last week having previously dumped out world number 14 Lucas Pouille.

L Mayer to win 2-0
2pts 6-5 Hills
