Addicks set for classic Wembley rematch

Charlton met Sunderland in one of the greatest playoff games ever played in the 1998 Championship final and the fixture will be repeated 21 years later in the Sky Bet League One playoff final.

The Addicks' semi-final second leg against Doncaster was a cracker, with Doncaster matching Charlton's 2-1 away win in the first leg and going ahead in extra-time before being pegged back a minute later. The first seven spot-kicks were converted before three straight misses left Charlton celebrating.

Bookmakers can't separate Charlton and Sunderland for promotion, making both clubs 10-11 to go up.

Black Cats get revenge

Sunderland gained revenge for their EFL Trophy final defeat at the hands of Portsmouth at Wembley by knocking them out of the Sky Bet League One playoff semi-finals.

A 0-0 draw at Fratton Park saw the Black Cats progress 1-0 on aggregate. Sunderland were 5-6 to gain promotion back to the Championship at the first attempt after their win.

Delight for Derby at Leeds

Sky Bet Championship playoff outsiders Derby produced a superb comeback to reach the final at the expense of Leeds.

United looked to be set for qualification after Stuart Dallas put them one up on the night and 2-0 on aggregate before Derby struck either side of half time through Jack Marriott and Mason Mount.

Harry Wilson's penalty put Derby ahead in the tie only for Dallas to equalise. Leeds then suffered a major blow with Gaetano Berardi sent off and Marriott made them pay to score the goal that saw County win 4-2 at Elland Road to progress 4-3 on aggregate.

Derby, who had Scott Malone sent off late on, now face a date with destiny against Aston Villa and are 13-10 with bet365 to gain promotion to the Premier League. Villa are 8-13.

Villa victorious on penalties

Aston Villa squeezed past West Brom on penalties to secure their spot in the Championship playoff final and Dean Smith's side are 10-11 with Betfair and Paddy Power to return to the Premier League.

Craig Dawson scored the only goal of the night, bringing West Brom level at 2-2 on aggregate, although Chris Brunt's second-half red card left the Baggies hanging on for penalties.

Villa's keeper Jed Steer was the hero of the shootout as he saved from Mason Holgate and Ahmed Hegazi. Albert Adomah's wayward penalty briefly gave Albion hope of a reprieve before Tammy Abraham converted from 12 yards to send Villa to Wembley.

Newport to meet Tranmere in final

Newport County became the first team to book a playoff final spot at Wembley this season by beating Mansfield in a shootout after a goalless second leg at Field Mill.

The Welsh side had been 11-2 outsiders for promotion after drawing the first leg 1-1 at home but they were perfect from the spot and are one game away from reaching League One for the first time after six seasons in the Football League.

Newport are 11-10 to win the playoffs and they will meet Tranmere, who are 8-11 for promotion. Rovers beat Forest Green 2-1 on aggregate with James Norwood scoring the decisive goal in a 1-1 draw at the New Lawn.

Addicks favourites to progress

Charlton became Sky Bet's new favourites for promotion after winning the first leg of their Sky Bet League One playoff semi-final 2-1 at Doncaster.

The Addicks might have had an even easier task at the Valley after going 2-0 up through Lyle Taylor and Joe Aribo in three first-half minutes, but a late goal by Matty Blair gave Rovers hope.

Charlton are 11-8 to go up with the EFL sponsors, who have Sunderland at 15-8 after their 1-0 home win over Portsmouth. A Chris Maguire volley gave the Black Cats the edge, but they were hampered in their efforts to take a bigger lead south with them when defender Alim Ozturk was sent off in the second half.

Victory for Villa

Aston Villa remain on course for a Wembley playoff appearance for the second season running after beating West Brom 2-1 in their Sky Bet Championship semi-final first leg at Villa Park.

Dean Smith's side are 1-3 to reach the final after they came from behind to beat Albion, who led through Dwight Gayle. Conor Hourihane equalised before Tammy Abraham struck from the penalty spot to hand Villa the advantage.

A nightmare second half for the Baggies continued outside of the goals conceded as Gayle was sent off, ruling him out of Tuesday's second leg at the Hawthorns. Fellow forward Hal Robson-Kanu is also suspended for West Brom, who are 12-5 to reach the final.

Playoff favourites Leeds made a winning start as they triumphed 1-0 at Derby with Kemar Roofe netting.

Strong Stags start well

Mansfield have hardened as Sky Bet League Two promotion favourites following a 1-1 draw away at Newport County. The Stags are 13-10 with Newport out to 11-2.

Tranmere beat ten-man Forest Green 1-0 at Prenton Park in the other semi-final first leg. Tranny are 5-2 to get up to League One with Forest Green at 9-2.

Playoff betting

Leeds are 15-8 favourites to claim the final promotion place into next season Premier League after the regular Sky Bet Championship season was completed.

Marcelo Bielsa's side play Derby over two legs while Aston Villa, second favourites to win the playoffs at 9-4, will face West Brom.
