Following a fifth-place finish upon their return to the Bundesliga 2 two seasons ago Dynamo Dresden were threatened by relegation last term, but they can get their 2018-19 campaign off to a flyer against MSV Duisburg.

Despite finishing seventh in the German second division last season, level on points with the three sides above them, Duisburg were consistently poor at the back.

No side shipped more than the 56 goals they conceded in the Bundesliga 2 last campaign and their rearguard will likely be further weakened by the loss of first-choice goalkeeper Mark Flekken to Freiburg.

Duisburg were not much stronger at the other end of the pitch, with Ukrainian Borys Tashchy finishing as the club’s top scorer with just 11 goals, and their failure to win more than two games in a row all season suggests their league position flattered them.

Dresden’s 2017-18 season was disappointing but they showed in glimpses an ability to perform against bigger sides, holding Nuremberg at home and beating title winners Fortuna Dusseldorf on the road.

The hosts won the corresponding fixture 1-0 on the opening day of last season and a repeat result could unfold at the Dresden Stadion.
