Derby can make most of Norwich's fatigue
What’s your best bet of the weekend?
After two high-profile games in a few days – the big derby at Portman Road, followed by 120 minutes at the Emirates on Tuesday – this may be just the right time to oppose Norwich.
At around 11-4 backing Derby seems worthwhile and slightly more risk-averse punters can choose the draw no bet or +0.5 Asian handicap options.
Who are the most vulnerable favourites?
A few worth a mention here. Sheffield Wednesday seem too short for their derby with Barnsley, as do Wigan, who face arguably their toughest League One rivals in an inconsistent but very capable Blackburn side.
Portsmouth are still priced as though they are promotion challengers, which I’m not sure they are. They can be opposed against Bradford.
Where is the value at Old Trafford?
Tottenham coped without Harry Kane last season, albeit from a pretty small sample of fixtures. However, it’s hard to dress up him missing the game as anything other than a major blow and I’d rather be with Manchester United -0.25 on the Asian handicap.
Is Claude Puel a good fit for Leicester?
I don’t think it’s the bad or mysterious move that some of the usual xenophobes who get asked on TV seem to be claiming. Southampton were a better team under Puel than the league table suggested last season and he did more than well enough to deserve a second crack at it somewhere.
Saturday football tipsters
Should Everton have given Ronald Koeman more time?
No. If anything, Everton get an easier ride than they should from the press and pundits.
They’re often cast as ‘plucky little Everton, trying hard against all odds’ but they’re supposed to be the seventh-best team in the country. Instead they’ve looked like a side battling relegation and there was no sign of an end to their chronic underachievement.
What’s your best bet for matchday four of the Champions League?
Although Chelsea came back to draw with Roma on matchday three, their recent performance level has been a bit of a concern and the Italians can claim maximum points on Tuesday.
