Match preview

Few would have predicted both the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Rams would be out of the playoff race by Christmas, but at 4-10 any ambitions either team have gone up in smoke.

With the playoffs gone and neither franchise owning a first-round draft pick in 2023, this game is largely meaningless, making betting on it is a tricky proposition with the Broncos positioned as unattractive favourites after a victory over the Arizona Cardinals last time out.

Big-money flop Russell Wilson sat out that game but will return at quarterback in LA to face a Rams team he found it difficult to perform against in his Seattle days.

As underwhelming as Wilson has been this season, at least Denver have their first-choice quarterback with the Rams forced to start Baker Mayfield, their fourth QB of the season, as a result of a string of injuries.

Mayfield, playing behind a decimated offensive line, struggled to move the ball in Monday’s loss to the Green Bay Packers and must now contend with a Denver defence giving up 18.1 points per game on average.

A blunt Broncos offence may not fare much better than the hosts given they’ve scored a league-low 21 touchdowns all season.

Denver’s point-scoring problems have been magnified on the road, where they have failed to score more than ten points in their last three games. All three of those games ended with fewer than four touchdowns in total and a punt on a low-scoring Christmas clash at odds-against appeals.
