Taro Daniel took a few observers by surprise when going all the way in Istanbul in early May, but the Japanese ace may find Roberto Carballes Baena a tough nut to crack in round two of the Swiss Open.

Not that Daniel is a bad player – he isn’t and he enjoys performing on slow red clay courts.

But Gstaad is more than 1,000m above sea level, and the conditions are likely to favour the Spaniard more than Daniel so that may explain why Carballes Baena, a title winner at an altitude of 2,850m in Quito in February, has attracted good early support.

Daniel is ranked 88th on the ATP chart, while Carballes Baena is 13 spots higher at 75th and so punters may be getting value with the Tenerife native priced at a shade of odds-on.

Carballes Baena leads 5-1 in their personal series – he has won the last five – and has a big chance to improve that record.

The live action continues in Hamburg, Moscow and Nanchang in China but little else stands out as value on the day-three cards.
