Defeat at West Ham piles the pressure on Jose Mourinho

Liverpool relinquish top spot with stalemate at Stamford Bridge

Jose Mourinho watched his side make a dismal start against Newcastle
1 of 1

Jose Mourinho's future at Manchester United looks more uncertain than ever after he watched the Red Devils crash to a dismal 3-1 defeat at West Ham.

The result leaves United on ten points after seven games - their joint-worst start to a campaign since the 1989-90 season.

Calls for a change of direction are growing and are reflected by Coral, who offer 1-3 that Mourinho leaves Old Trafford this year and 1-5 that he goes before the end of the season.

Alexis Sanchez and Jesse Lingard were left out of the squad and Mourinho switched from a back four to a back three, but his tactics soon backfired as Felipe Anderson fired West Ham into the lead.

An own goal from Victor Lindelof and Marko Arnautovic's fourth goal of the campaign completed a miserable afternoon for Mourinho, who is the 5-4 favourite to be the next top-flight manager to go.

The Portuguese manager's strained relationship with Paul Pogba attracted a lot of pre-match attention.

Pogba was substituted in the second half but his long-term United prospects look better than his boss's.

BoyleSports offer 4-11 that Mourinho leaves first and 2-1 that Pogba beats him to the exit.

United's plight is made worse by the excellence of neighbours Manchester City, who moved to the top of the table with a routine 2-0 victory at home to Brighton.

Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero were on target for the Citizens, who remained 8-11 favourites in the title betting.

Liverpool relinquished top spot but remained unbeaten after a glorious 89th-minute goal from substitute Daniel Sturridge earned them a 1-1 draw at Chelsea.

Eden Hazard's 25th-minute goal, his sixth of the season, had appeared to put Chelsea on course for victory but the Blues shared the points for a second successive weekend and remain third.

Harry Kane scored his fourth and fifth goals of the season as Tottenham eased to a 2-0 victory at Huddersfield.

Spurs moved into the Champions League qualification places and Arsenal joined them on 15 points after a Craig Cathcart own goal and a Mesut Ozil strike sealed a 2-0 victory at home to Watford.

There were also 2-0 wins for Leicester, away to Newcastle, and Wolves, at home to Southampton, while Everton ended a four-match winless sequence in the league by beating Fulham 3-0 at Goodison.

Newcastle remain in the bottom three with two points from seven games and have shortened from 7-2 to 5-2 to be relegated.

All of the 3pm top-flight kick-offs featured clean sheets, which was bad news for backers of the popular both-teams-to-score bet.
