Well worth backing there to be a new PDC hero this year

Maximum checkout chances underrated

Five former William Hill world champions go to post at Alexandra Palace – and it's worth taking the 5-2 that none of them wins it this year.

That’s the price that there is a first-time winner on New Year’s Day, an outcome which is made all the more likely when you consider that four of those five former winners are in the same half of the draw.

The fifth, Rob Cross, is having such a miserable time that it's a decent shout the bottom half will produce a finalist who has yet to lift the trophy.

There were six 170 checkouts at Alexandra Palace last year, the kind of finish that these big-name aces expect to nail. Get on the 10-11 that there are five or more this time.

Last year’s six 170 finishes were culled from 71 matches. This time round there are 95 games.
