World Series of Darts Finals preview
Gerwyn Price seems to thrive on adversity, so it's little surprise that the recently-crocked Welshman heads for the World Series of Darts Finals in Amsterdam full of self-belief.
The man who has carved out a successful and fruitful career littered with spats with fellow pros and run-ins with crowds, heads for the AFAS Live venue in the Netherlands just a couple of weeks after being in hospital having a swollen hand checked.
An injury to his throwing hand is just about the worst possible mishap an arrowsmith could suffer, yet you wouldn't have sensed there had been an issue over the past week.
Last weekend he returned to the oche competitively and made the quarter-finals of the Czech Open.
And this week, on the floor in Hildesheim in Germany, Gezzy won Players Championship 26 before reaching the final of PC27 a day later.
Clearly the Iceman is not feeling the injury and he is throwing magnificently - he beat Gian van Veen in Tuesday's final with a 109-plus average, one of five ton-plus averages over the course of the two days.
The seven-time major champion is definitely in the weakest quarter in Amsterdam, so expect big things from a player who has already won six events in 2025.
Luke Littler is the reigning champion and favourite, while Luke Humphries is possibly back to his best after winning the Czech Open last week, but neither carry the invincible aura they did last winter.
There are cases to be made for plenty of players with Joe Cullen winning PC27 against all the odds, James Wade now a model of consistency, Stephen Bunting the top seed after a fabulous year and Josh Rock making waves.
Rock and Bunting are the star turns in a brute of a top quarter with the Bullet not even guaranteed to make round two given how well his first-round opponent Danny Noppert played in Hildesheim this week. Noppert can win that game and is worth backing to land the handicap honours at odds-against with a 1.5-leg start.
Nijman could fare best of the home contingent
Another game to look forward to - certainly one the crowds in Amsterdam will home in on - is the all-Dutch showdown between Michael van Gerwen and Wessel Nijman.
This is probably a decent time to be taking on the inconsistent Van Gerwen and Nijman can go in.
Nijman is actually worth backing to win the quarter in which Humphries is the big name, at 7-1.
He has emerged from the winter doldrums and is throwing well again, looking more than capable of landing quite a fancy price.
