Tournament preview

The World Series of Darts Finals takes place in Amsterdam this weekend, and while there is no obvious softer half of the draw, Peter Wright stands out at a decent price.

Snakebite isn’t seeded so comes in at the first round – he should see off Fallon Sherrock with minimum fuss – and showed he's well-rested and in good health after a recent op by winning in Germany only last weekend.

For a streaky runner in the top half, Dirk van Duijvenbode reached the final of the Dutch Darts Masters, one of six qualifiers for this weekend's shootout, and is capable of sky-high numbers.

Dimitri van den Bergh, beaten in last year's final by Jonny Clayton, will have his admirers after recent good results, although he's been to hospital this week for tests after suffering a panic attack last weekend.

Looking at the first-round action, Danny Baggish has just had the week to remember in Canada and can use those good vibes to make an instant impact.

The 39-year-old American won his second North American ranking title of the year to build an unassailable lead at the top of the standings.

That, in turn, has guaranteed him a return to Alexandra Palace for the worlds and should give him a real lift for his first-round clash with Ryan Joyce at the AFAS Live.

Baggish is the outsider but threw beautifully to qualify, hammering Ryan Meikle and Brendan Dolan.

Joyce pipped Krzyzstof Ratajski 5-4 in his final qualifier, a rare decent result in an otherwise pretty awful summer for Relentless, who has won just four matches in seven floor events since the start of July. One of those losses was at the hands of Baggish, a 6-3 loss last month in which the Guam-born Floridian averaged over 101.

The other outsider in round one action to latch on to has to be Simon Whitlock against Danny Noppert.

Both men have had major-winning years – Noppert won the UK Open, Whitlock the World Cup in partnership with Damon Heta – and this should be really tight.
