Tournament special bets

Super-cool Michael van Gerwen fears no one but the darting demigod and former world champion knows only too well there is one name in his section of the draw to be wary of.

Mighty Mike will doubtless make light work of Chas Barstow or John Norman Junior and will be quite happy taking on whichever of Chris Dobey, Darius Labanauskas or Rusty-Jake Rodriguez makes it to round three.

But if the formbook, rather than the seedings, determine who's still in the bracket come round four, then it should be Luke Humphries toeing the oche alongside MvG just after Christmas.

And make no mistake, Cool Hand Luke has the game to beat Van Gerwen. He's done it before, he'll most likely do it again, and the impressive Berkshire dartist is well worth a punt at 6-1 to make the quarter-finals.

Humphries, who has shone at Ally Pally before having twice made the quarters, has enjoyed a breakthrough year, winning games at the Matchplay and Grand Prix after reaching the final of March's UK Open, where he beat Van Gerwen in the semis.

Many are tipping him as a future world champion and he has unquestionably got the game to rule the world at some stage in his career.

It's not unknown for players to reach the quarter-finals having started in round one – Humphries has done it twice; Dirk van Duijvenbode did it last year – and with four former world champions starting their campaigns there this year, there's some serious depth.

Not such a household name as Raymond van Barneveld or Adrian Lewis is Alan Soutar, whose got a decent shout at 9-1 of making the last eight.

To do so he would have to overcome first Diogo Portela and then Mensur Suljovic, who is a pale shadow of the class act he once was.

It gets tougher for Soutar if he makes it that far with two further wins required to land the odds. But he's beaten Barney at the UK Open this year on his TV debut and reached two quarters and a semi in his first year on tour.

If Ryan Searle goes well then he's going to pile in enough maximums to land at least a place in the tournament 180s betting at 33-1.
