Betfred World Matchplay quarter-final preview

Dimitri van den Bergh has been laying on a finishing masterclass in this week’s Betfred World Matchplay and that could be the difference in his quarter-final against Peter Wright in a repeat of last year's Winter Gardens final.

Van den Bergh, who lost that showdown in Blackpool, is the outsider but playing well enough to defy those odds, especially if he sustains his sky-high checkout numbers.

The ninth seed averaged 71 per cent checking out during a faultless 10-2 humbling of Callan Rydz on Saturday and clocked up a 61 per cent checkout rate during Tuesday evening's 11-6 success over Rowby-John Rodriguez.

Wright was a mixed bag against Krzysztof Ratajski, banging in maximums and a pair of ton finishes but also showing a few nervy moments towards the line in a 13-11 success.

Michael van Gerwen is going through the gears at 90 per cent after wrist surgery and that still should be good enough against Nathan Aspinall.

The Asp is working his way back nicely after a horror few months and has beaten two in-form players in Luke Humphries and James Wade.

Van Gerwen, okay against Adrian Lewis but impressive against Joe Cullen, looks fresh and full of self-belief and is quite capable of mirroring the 16-9 success he meted out to Aspinall at this very stage of last year's competition.
