Semi-final preview

James Wade is making a habit of saving his best darts for the Grand Slam and last season’s runner-up is unlikely to go down without a fight in his semi-final showdown with world champion Gerwyn Price.

The Machine was on the brink of an early elimination after losing his opening group assignment against Jim Williams, but a 111.71 average in a 5-2 win over Rob Cross sealed his spot in the knockout stages.

Wade then brushed aside Rowby-John Rodriguez 10-2 in the last 16 before overcoming Cross again 16-14 to tee-up this semi-final tussle.

The world number four was involved in an epic final-leg decider with Dimitri van Den Bergh at this stage last season and another lengthy battle may be in store.

Since his defeat to Williams, Wade has lost his throw just twice in four matches and that makes him a formidable opponent for Price.

The Welshman has not been at his brilliant best in Wolverhampton but he is delivering when it matters, and a 16-12 win over his red-hot compatriot Jonny Clayton would have silenced any of his doubters.

But Price is yet to average in excess of 100 in the this year's tournament so Wade, who has won both meetings with the Welshman in 2021, can ensure this is a competitive contest.

In the other semi-final, Michael Smith will face Peter Wright after the Bully Boy beat Michael van Gerwen 16-13 to make it to the final four.

Snakebite ensured there was no fairytale ending for Fallon Sherrock as he secured a hard fought victory over the Queen of the Palace, also by a score of 16-13.

Wright has won four of the last five meetings between him and Smith, but the man from St Helens has been in fine form this week and could prove a real challenge to the world number two.

Both best-of-31 semi-finals will be played on Sunday afternoon with the winning players returning in the evening for a title decider played over the same format.
