Night 11 preview
Nathan Aspinall has lost only one match during a dream Premier League campaign and the man who beat him back on Night Two can repeat the feat on Night 11.
Dimitri van den Bergh averaged almost 104 when pipping Aspinall 7-5 in a high-class encounter last month and it would be a short price that at least one of these two reaches three-figures again in their rematch at The Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes.
It's the points, however, rather than the averages that float the boats of these playoff chasers and they are there for Van den Bergh to hoover up.
The Belgian returned to the competition on Wednesday after a successful Super Series and carried on where he left off in Germany averaging a stunning 106.78 in defeat against Michael van Gerwen, which says as much about how well Mighty Mike played.
The point being there is nothing wrong with Van den Bergh's game whereas Aspinall will have to up his performance from his messy 8-5 triumph over Peter Wright.
Wright and Gary Anderson now find themselves in the bottom two spots in the tournament and, given the calibre of those above them, are going to have to start winning games. One of them could do so tonight when they go toe-to-toe and, with neither man excelling, Snakebite looks short enough around even-money.
There was nothing wrong with James Wade's finishing against Jonny Clayton on Tuesday – the Machine had five looks at double and pinged the lot - but he lost 8-5 because he simply lacked the scoring power to stay with the Welshman.
The same may well happen against Jose de Sousa, who continues to grow into the tournament.
And that brings us to game of the night – Clayton versus Van Gerwen.
The Green Machine was angry, he said, angry enough to deliver a brutal display against Van den Bergh as he strives to hit the throttle after a slow start to 2021.
His problem is a lack of consistency, so the advice is don't necessarily be swayed by one red-hot performance. His other problem is that Clayton knows how to beat him because he's done so on the three occasions they have met this year. At the prices, get on the Welshman.
