Premier League Darts predictions

Thirteen may be unlucky for some but Night 13 could be when Michael van Gerwen finally gets off the mark in this season's Premier League.

Van Gerwen is one of only two players yet to record a nightly success and the other happens to be his opponent in Birmingham on Thursday, Rob Cross, who is playing like the weakest player in the eight-man competition at present.

MvG will be motivated to give his top-four aspirations a boost at the Utilita Arena, where he defeated Luke Littler to land the spoils last year, and a quarter-final with Cross should tee him up nicely.

Getting past the first hurdle in eight of the 12 nights to date means Van Gerwen is still well in the reckoning to make the playoffs, and it would be quite astonishing if the seven-time Premier League champion is unable to take a single nightly prize before the top four toe the oche at London’s O2 Arena.

A semi-final against Luke Humphries or Gerwyn Price, last week’s winner in Liverpool, will be tough but by no means impossible and there have been some signs that Van Gerwen is starting to find some form recently.

The Dutchman made the semi-finals in Liverpool, where he was edged out 6-4 by Humphries after coming from behind to defeat world champion Littler in his opener, and that came hot on the heels of a European Tour success in Munich, where he averaged in excess of 102 in all but one of his five matches.

At 5-6, Chris Dobey may be the best quarter-final bet of the night against Nathan Aspinall, who has lost four of his last five matches.

One of those defeats came at the hands of Dobey two weeks ago in Rotterdam, where Hollywood took top billing, and it is difficult to see the Asp biting back in Birmingham.

Dobey has lost only three of his last 11 matches and he was unfortunate to exit at the quarter-final stage of the latest European Tour event on Sunday, when he lost 6-4 to eventual champion Martin Schindler despite averaging 106.50.
