Night Two betting preview

There have been countless unheralded winners of major TV events over the last couple of years and this year's Premier League will throw up its share of shocks as well – such as James Wade winning on Night Two in Liverpool?

It's not impossible – after all, less than 12 months ago Wade was landing big odds at the UK Open and is a player with a big-stage pedigree as he showed last week in Cardiff when he beat Gerwyn Price and the crowd before being pipped by Jonny Clayton in round two.

Wade made the semi-finals at the World Championship just over a month ago and clearly has the game to win one of these mini-knockouts. He's also a nice price.

Peter Wright v Michael van Gerwen

Head-to-head: Van Gerwen leads 58-22

Peter Wright is a hard man to oppose these days – he's lost just three of his last 35 matches and looked princely last Thursday when beating Michael Smith, Gary Anderson and Jonny Clayton to take five points on opening night.

On current form you'd expect to see him beat Michael van Gerwen (he's in the unusual position of being favourite to do so), who had a poor weekend in Barnsley to follow a disappointing night in Cardiff.

Jonny Clayton v Michael Smith

Head-to-head: Smith leads 8-3

Clayton's phenomenal year continued in Cardiff with two impressive wins before he ran out of steam against Wright in the final.

Smith never got going last week – he didn't even manage a solitary 180 in nine legs of darts in defeat to Wright in his opener.

These are two classy players, big scorers both, who laid on a feast at Alexandra Palace in round four where Smith won an epic. Sooner or later Bully Boy will rediscover his best and, at a juicy price, take a chance that he does just that in front of his fans on Merseyside.

James Wade v Joe Cullen

Head-to-head: Wade leads 6-4

Joe Cullen threw some big bombs on his Premier League debut, powering in five 180s and a 102 checkout. But he also missed 19 out of 21 darts at double in letting Clayton off the hook.

That's an issue for Cullen, which he is acutely aware of, and he knows that if he does the same again then Wade will pick up all the scraps. He's built a career on doing just that.

Gerwyn Price v Gary Anderson

Head-to-head: Level at 9-9

Gerwyn Price has won seven of his last ten showdowns with Gary Anderson though he struggled a week ago in Cardiff, maybe weighed down by expectation in front of his own fans.

Price didn't look up for it, though going toe to toe with Anderson – remember their Grand Slam barney? – should ensure he's a bit edgier this time, a bit nastier and, therefore, a bit better.

Anderson looks a fair price to hit the most 180s. He is averaging one every 3.4 legs this year, Price one every 3.2, which is enough to make you query the Scot's maximums matchbet price.
