Night Nine preview

It's Judgement Night in the Premier League though without the usual fanfare – and that's not simply down to the absence of fans at the Milton Keynes Marshall Arena.

The other thing missing from this usually dramatic evening is an elimination battle as Rob Cross and Glen Durrant are already booked in for ninth and tenth places.

And the two of them can have a right good old debrief about where it all went wrong since they are playing each other in the opening game of Night Nine, a chance to bid farewell to a competition which for Cross has been hugely frustrating after a decent start and for reigning champion Duzza has been an utter nightmare.

The other eight, however, are looking only upwards, or in Dimitri van den Bergh's case over his shoulder since he's the man to catch after eight rounds of tungsten jousting.

And he may be overhauled this evening since he could very plausibly get chinned by James Wade, whose inconsistency makes him a serious danger at decent odds - and 2-1 look like decent odds.

This is a player who can turn it on as well as anyone when the mood takes him, as he did bringing down Michael van Gerwen, Peter Wright and Jonny Clayton, with 105-plus averages in the last two of those successes.

Van den Bergh is doing very little wrong – even averaging 87 he managed to beat Gary Anderson on Wednesday – but is he really any better than Wade? Probably not.

Jose de Sousa, the Portuguese Man O'Scores, looks a massive threat while he's continuing to annihilate the treble 20 bed – it's consistency on the outer ring he craves.

That said, he has enjoyed two massive wins this week before slipping up against Van Gerwen who you'll never beat with a 28 percent checkout rate. Next up is Peter Wright and De Sousa, a marginal outsider, has the scoring power to do a job on the Scot who is yet to show his very best form in this year's competition.

Nathan Aspinall, in contrast, really is showing his best form as he emerges from a pretty poor 2020.

The Asp hasn't lost a match since Night Two and boasts a winning record against Anderson as does Jonny Clayton over Michael van Gerwen.

The Welshman was top after the first week of action and now finds himself in eighth spot after picking up a solitary point from three matches. He has still been averaging 101 and change this week but the victories have deserted him. He can get back on the bike against Van Gerwen, although laying the Dutchman gives us the draw on our side as well.
