Night Five betting preview

The Premier League's elite eight suffered bloody noses galore in the bunfight at Butlin's over the weekend and all will be keen to restore reputations on Night Five in Brighton.

Gerwyn Price is one player unable to make amends at the Brighton Arena, however, after a hand injury ruled him out.

The Iceman's withdrawal handed quarter-final opponent Joe Cullen an automatic 6-0 win and a bye into the semi-finals.

The loss of any potential points from Night Five and a crushing blow to his leg difference, also saw Gezzy on the drift in outright betting for the Premier League, out to 4-1 having been around 3-1 in the morning.

Punters looking for the winner on the south coast will have clocked that we've had four different winners over the first four nights, although Peter Wright could be the man to become the first multi-winner of the new-look tournament.

Gary Anderson v Michael Smith

Head-to-head: Anderson leads 13-9

Night Five kicks off with a battle of the backmarkers, two men who have managed just one win in the tournament to date.

Gary Anderson's was on Night One, Michael Smith's on Night Four, so you could argue that Bully Boy is on more of a roll. He reached the UK Open final on Sunday, which he lost to Danny Noppert, taking his record in major finals to 0-7.

One bet to consider has to be Anderson +0.5 in the 180s handicap. On tour this year Ando averages a max every three legs, Smith one every 3.2 while their figures in the Premier League are near-identical.

Peter Wright v Jonny Clayton

H2H: Wright leads 12-2

Peter Wright averaged a shade over 100 at Minehead with excellent wins over Joe Cullen and Simon Whitlock before he chucked in one of those rare shockers against William O'Connor, in which he hit bigger scores and attempted more doubles but, for once, missed too many of them. His checkout percentage was a meagre 28 and that doesn't get the job done.

But there were still enough positives for Wright – usurping Gerwyn Price as world number one for starters – and he's playing well enough to take care of Jonny Clayton, who he has hammered three times in 2022 already.

Michael van Gerwen v James Wade

H2H: Van Gerwen leads 40-16

Michael van Gerwen isn't playing consistently well enough to warrant being 2-5 against anyone, never mind a player as match-hardened and obdurate as James Wade.

The Green Machine looked imperious in Exeter last week taking the spoils but then couldn't take more than four legs off Damon Heta in round five in Minehead.

The bet looks to be Betfair's 5-6 that the Dutchman averages more than 98.5. He's done that in each of his last four league games and these two majestic finishers should ensure there aren't many scrappy legs to bring the numbers down.
