Day 12 preview

The big news from the William Hill World Championship on Tuesday came off the oche as three-time world champion Michael van Gerwen was forced to withdraw after testing positive for Covid-19.

Van Gerwen’s withdrawal means Chris Dobey receives a bye to the last 16. Tournament sponsor Hills immediately confirmed they would be refunding bets on MvG in a number of outright markets.

Wednesday's action is rounded off by the top two in the betting to be crowned world champion with Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton getting the fourth round under way at the Palace.

Before Price takes on Dirk van Duijvenbode and Clayton tackles Michael Smith there are the last four third-round ties to be decided.

Jose de Sousa v Alan Soutar

Head to head: No previous meetings

Jose de Sousa's power scoring ensures the Portuguese Man O'Scores gets down to his doubles quick enough – it's the former Grand Slam champ's ability around the outer ring that will determine whether he wins the match or not, though.

He had 17 more goes at a double than second-round opponent Jason Lowe yet still only snuck home with a 3-2 win, and that has to give Alan Soutar hope. De Sousa's plenty short enough at 1-3.

Dave Chisnall v Luke Humphries

H2H: Chisnall leads 5-1

Luke Humphries has beaten Chizzy only once, but crucially it was at their last meeting, their sole clash of 2021, and it came in the UK Open quarters. And Cool Hand has trained on since then.

The Berkshire thrower has reached a trio of Tour finals alongside his appearance in the UK Open final and his figures on the floor are comparable with Chisnall's. Both have big-stage experience and the bookies, entirely understandably, can hardly separate them.

Nathan Aspinall v Callan Rydz

H2H: Tied 1-1

Two-time semi-finalist Nathan Aspinall faces a challenge from Callan Rydz, and The Riot looks more than good enough to land odds of 6-5.

The 23-year-old Geordie has yet to drop a set in his two matches, humiliating Yuki Yamada and averaging over 102 in a stunning whitewash of the doughty Brendan Dolan.

The Asp was given a working over by Joe Murnan and hasn't had the greatest of years.

Gary Anderson v Ian White

H2H: Anderson leads 9-6

Two old timers who have left their golden days behind – but of the two it's Gazza who still has the bigger game on the bigger stage.

Ian White has beaten Ando twice this year but we know he never produces his best in the big TV events and the chances are that he will fall short once more.

Gerwyn Price v Dirk van Duijvenbode

H2H: Price leads 12-1

Round four kicks off with the reigning champion and world number one Gerwyn Price taking on erratic Dutchman Dirk van Duijvenbode.

It's a repeat of the 2020 Grand Prix final which Price won and Van Duijvenbode has beaten the Welsh scrapper just once in 13 previous meetings.

Gezzy will be buzzing after surviving a titanic tussle with Kim Huybrechts though Van Duijvenvbode will also see this as a free hit after fighting back from the dead at 3-0 down to pip Ross Smith in round three.

Both men are playing patchily so while Price should win, a massacre is unlikely.

Jonny Clayton v Michael Smith

H2H: Smith leads 7-3

Michael Smith hasn't played this well at the Palace since he reached the final three years ago – yet it's still incredibly hard to see past The Ferret.

JC has been producing biblical stuff throughout 2021 and it would be a miracle if Bully Boy can stop him.

The Welshman has averaged over 103 and 102 seeing off Keane Barry and Gabriel Clemens – he dropped only four legs against the German – and Smith's knack of nodding off in games (he was far too good for Willie O'Connor yet still gifted him two sets) will always be a worry for his supporters.
