Monday's preview

Four seeds are in action on night one of the BoyleSports World Grand Prix and don't be surprised if at least two of them aren’t packing their bags by closing time.

Four of the eight seeds crashed out in round one last year, an improvement on 2020 when six fell at the first.

Punters know only too well that world rankings, high averages and pedigree don’t count for a great deal in round one of the Grand Prix, and that's why there won't be too many raised eyebrows should Jose de Sousa, seeded six, and Jonny Clayton, seeded seven, crash out on night one.

Clayton is the defending champion and playing well. But his opponent Dirk van Duijvenbode, the 2020 runner-up, is also in good nick.

The Welshman beat the Dutchman in last week's Belgian Open with both men averaging over 105. A week earlier, however, Van Duijvenbode beat Clayton in the World Series.

There is little between these two, arguably even less over three sets of double-in, double-out.

Jose de Sousa has had two tilts at the Grand Prix, winning one game, and that was effectively a bye against Glen Durrant, who averaged 58.

This format doesn't seem to suit De Sousa, whose wobbliness around key doubles is still there, and any weakness will be exploited by a reborn Adrian Lewis.

Jackpot, a former finalist, was back in the winner's enclosure on the Pro Tour in June and demonstrated his pedigree again last week making the last eight in Belgium. He knows how to do well in this event, at this format, and arguably shouldn't be the outsider against De Sousa.

The other night one bet may well be Dave Chisnall, the winner in Belgium, to stamp that form by seeing off Dimitri van den Bergh, who has been managing a health issue of late and has also changed equipment.
