Betfred World Matchplay day three preview

Jose de Sousa has every reason to feel confident going into his showdown with Gabriel Clemens in round one of the Betfred World Matchplay in Blackpool.

This is a repeat of a first-round tie last year which De Sousa won and won well, crushing the German 10-2.

The Portuguese Man o'Scores didn't go any further and that's been the story of his last year or so – the odd sizzling effort followed by something less convincing.

Clemens is no mug but rarely shines on the big stage and De Sousa rightly is a shade of odds-on. He's a recent European Tour semi-finalist, beat Peter Wright in a World Cup singles game and if he can avoid the usual miscounts he should be able to win well.

You can get even money about De Sousa giving up 1.5 legs on the handicap which, given you need to win by two unless it goes to a decider, is better value.

Gerwyn Price can make it a lose-lose night for Germany by beating Clemens' World Cup partner Martin Schindler.

Indeed, Price and Schindler met at last month's World Cup, a best-of-seven shootout which didn't go further than four legs - Gezzy winning 4-0 with an outrageous 117.88 average.

Again, Schindler's stage performances do little to invite a great deal of confidence and even though the Welshman has lost more games than he has won since the end of May, rested and refreshed you just know he'll be ready for this.
