Michael Smith looks value alternative to odds-on Van Gerwen
Starts 11am Friday
The 13-event European Tour starts in Leverkusen on Friday with the European Open.
Michael van Gerwen, winner of six of the 12 events on the 2017 European Tour schedule, is odds-on favourite.
It’s a 48-man field with the top 16 in the Pro Tour Order of Merit coming in at the second-round stage. Van Gerwen, inevitably, heads the standings.
Michael Smith, who has made such a fine start to his Premier League campaign and won the one European Tour event last year which wasn’t snaffled by either Van Gerwen or Peter Wright, looks a fair each-way alternative to Mighty Mike at a nice price.
Recommendation
M Smith
