Improving Suljovic has the game to shock Snakebite

Mensur Suljovic's English isn’t the best, but Peter Wright’s assertion that the reason the Austrian is in sizzling form at the moment is that his opponents aren’t playing well against him won’t have got lost in translation.

Suljovic can use that coded criticism from Snakebite to his advantage by seeing off the world number three and Coral UK Open champion in the quarter-finals of the World Grand Prix in Dublin.

Suljovic has raised his game superbly over the past year in which he has reached seven finals, winning two of them, most recently a Players Championship heat at the weekend.

During his stellar last 12 months the world number seven has played Wright five times and won three of those matches.

He’s no fluke and his surge up the rankings is because he is playing well, not because opponents – Wright among them – aren’t producing against him.

He was taken to a fifth leg in each of his three sets against Steve West in round two and won the lot, so no one can question Suljovic’s bottle. You can, however, question his match price at 15-8, which looks too big.

The last quarter-final features Daryl Gurney and Robert Thornton, the Scot being the only former champion left in the tournament.

After a low-quality opener against Kim Huybrechts, the Thorn improved markedly to see off Dave Chisnall. But the formbook suggests 4-9 chance Gurney has to win this one, especially if the crowd get on his side – and the Scot’s back.
