Wednesday's betting preview

If it doesn't get any better it's "home time" according to Rob Cross, and Michael Smith could be the man to send Voltage packing at the Grand Slam.

Cross limped into round two in Wolverhampton, coming from 3-0 and 4-2 down against Martin Schindler – and surviving match darts – to set up his shootout with Smith.

Bully Boy is around the 8-13 mark which is a decent price, although you might want to up the risk level and back Smith giving up 2.5 legs on the handicap. Given that we're now in best-of-19 territory, that means a 10-7 win or better for Smith is a winner.

And there is no obvious reason why Smith shouldn't win by at least that margin.

He stormed through Group C, getting better as he went on, culminating in a 5-1 drubbing of Ritchie Edhouse in which the world championship runner-up averaged 102.2

With all respect to Smith and Cross, the tie of the night has to be the clash of the old-timers as Raymond van Barneveld takes on Simon Whitlock.

The Aussie and reigning World Cup winner produced a trio of 97-plus averages in finishing second in Group B and the longer format probably suits him given Barney's tendency to play in patches these days.
