Grand Slam of Darts quarter-final preview

Defending Grand Slam champion Luke Littler has his sights trained on another Major title but the Nuke's bid may be rocked in the quarter-finals.

Littler averaged 105.38 in a 10-4 last-16 win over Wessel Nijman, and while it’s a dangerous game to take on the world champion in any match, there are no guarantees he will reach such lofty standards again.

The world number two's impressive average was boosted by an 83.33 per cent checkout success rate and he was not as dominant as the scoreline suggests.

Nijman missed three darts at a double to get the contest back to 6-4 while the Dutchman also won two legs in 17 darts, suggesting Josh Rock will get chances in their last-eight showdown.

Rock is yet to taste major individual success on the PDC Tour, but the Northern Irishman won this year's World Cup alongside Daryl Gurney and he has the game to compete with the very best when at his peak.

A repeat of his 10-9 success over Connor Scutt in the last 16 won't trouble Littler, but Rock’s average of 98.35 is third-best on the Pro Tour this season and there is no doubt the World Matchplay and UK Open semi-finalist has the ability to compete with the Nuke.

At 3-1, Rock is fancied to outrun his odds.

Surprise quarter-finalist can keep the maximum count ticking over

Lukas Wenig has flown under the radar to make the last eight but there is no doubt he deserves his place in the quarters.

Wenig has beaten Cam Crabtree and Jonny Clayton in the group stage and then fellow German Niko Springer in the last 16 to set up a meeting with Danny Noppert, who beat Wenig 5-4 in the first round of group matches.

The German spurned seven match darts for victory on that occasion and while the the best-of-31-leg format gives Noppert ample time to show his class, there is no value in backing the Dutchman at 3-10.

Wenig may be able to keep this contest more competitive than bookmakers think and a longer match should lead to plenty of 180s.

A small play on over 15.5 maximums could reap rewards for punters.
